I agree, it feels a bit theme park-ish and I certainly wouldn’t visit expecting to experience authentic Danish culture, but the bakeries, food, beautiful landscape, and nearby Santa Barbara Wine Country all make it worth visiting.

There were a few motels, I remember the King Frederick specifically, and bakeries and some restaurants with traditional Danish fare. When I visited there in the late 80’s with my children I was shocked…gone was the sleepy charm that made Solvang so desirable…it had turned into a mini Knotts Berry Farm of Danish “culture.” I doubt I’ll return again.
