This is really, really cool to hear. Many of the houses we look at are so intimidating because of the amount of work they need. Still have to come across one that steals my heart, where I can fully envision the potential, but definitely thinking about the long haul of slowly making it ours. When we moved back from Copenhagen 3 years ago to Atlanta I knew there was NO WAY any house around here was going to be my style, so 2.5 years ago we bought a fixer so we could make it exactly as we wanted. We bought below our budget and scrimped together the money until we touched every last inch of the house. At first it was HORRRIBLE living with gross white carpet everywhere and a broken kitchen but now that its done it was soooo worth it! The market has easily kept pace with our renovations so we are still in a very good financial position, which is what I would expect for just about any area near LA. It WAS a lot of work and at times I thought we should have just bought something else and just adapted, but in the end we have a home that is a show piece of our style and has opened up incredible business streams for me that would have been hard to come by otherwise. My thinking is that if Rome wasn’t built in a day, then my house doesn’t either. :-) Wishing you all the best with the hunt and that you will get your dream starter home!

So interesting to hear about your journey over many years. I’d also love a situation where we’d be able to renovate and design our home. Fixers with a good layout that aren’t completely falling apart have been really hard to come across, or sometimes aren’t that much more affordable than a more updated home, but I do think of it as the ideal situation if we can find a price that’s right! Your countryside home sounds beautiful and that’s amazing you were able to design it exactly as you pleased. Appreciate the insight on location- what’s made the house hunt hard is because we’re prioritizing a good location which means our options for houses within our budget are not that great ha!
