Yes I’ve read both about the struggles of constantly living in that transition phase and contractors gone wrong. I wonder if I can welcome that much more stress into my life haha. A new build would be soooo amazing but you’re right, that doesn’t happen out here!

I think if this got you closer to know exactly what you want it was so worth it! I’ve always dreamed of doing a fixer upper but I just don’t think I’d ever get over the anxiety of having an ‘unfinished project’ for months on end! I also know that if you don’t know a good contractor it ends up being more expensive anyway! We really loved building our home but I know new builds in LA are not the norm <3 Can't wait to see you make a new space yours with your impeccable style!

EXACTLY. I’d look at remodels and be like oh I’d just change the kitchen cabinets, and the appliances, and the floors, and the bathrooms… so maybe we should start from somewhere that needs to be completely redone anyway! So far though we haven’t found a place with a price low enough to warrant all that work, but I’m considering this route more. I also think this is our best chance at a dream home in a dream neighborhood, you’re right. How wonderful that you’re making it happen, Kate!!

My husband and I bought a fixer upper in LA because we fell in love with the property’s open outdoor space and peace/quiet/tranquility. There was no way we could afford a turnkey home in the same area. Honestly, we looked at so many homes that were recently remodeled, but I didn’t like the style of the remodel. That was really disappointing, because I felt *guilty* wanting to remodel a “new” kitchen, you know? Like it would be a waste of money! We LOVE where we live, but a real fixer upper is a big commitment. We dedicate a ton of time to working on the house, and we still have so much to go! I’d say, if you’re willing to live in a transitional phase for a while, and if you’re willing to spend the time and energy, a fixer upper can be a dream home in a dream neighborhood! But it’s definitely not for everyone :)
