This is an excellent question and a reality I’ve had to face with purchasing couches in the past- the selection is so much broader online.
First I’ll always check if the brand has a showroom, which in the past has surprised me that there was one nearby and after visiting I was able to determine that I didn’t want the couch, thank goodness! Otherwise, a good return policy is a must. Sometimes I’ll contact customer service and make sure that I can return after trying and confirm what that protocol is.
The short answer, I don’t know for sure whether furniture purchased online will be comfortable, it’s a gamble. Usually I’ll take a look at the construction materials (fabric, filling material in cushions) and make my best guess on how soft or firm that’s going to feel. In conclusion, check the return policy, and speak with customer service- a lot of times they’re accommodating.
