Copenhagen got on to my travel list once I started seeing that a lot of my favorite design brands reside here. \u00a0You know this because most of the home decor and interiors\u00a0I share on this blog is either from or inspired by Danish design! \u00a0It only took two seconds of Googling\u00a0to see that I also had to come for the architecture- this is undoubtedly\u00a0one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever visited. \u00a0Further research revealed other very cool things, like how it’s rated the happiest city in the world, it’s the world’s greenest city, and it has the\u00a0highest density of Michelin Star\u00a0restaurants than any other city in the world. \u00a0Those are some major worldly accolades and in short, you have to visit Copenhagen.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The first things I noticed when we arrived is that the city is really clean, everyone rides a bike,\u00a0and the people are very laid-back and friendly. \u00a0Everyone speaks English, which was even more of\u00a0a relief after seeing that I didn’t pronounce a single Danish word correctly on the first attempt. \u00a0Drivers especially were nice about this.<\/p>\n

We visited\u00a0in April for our at-least-once-yearly-big-treat-yourself trip and I’ve so looked forward to putting this travel guide together because I wouldn’t mind reliving it over and over. \u00a0I left daydreaming about what it would be like if we continued living there. \u00a0That’s usually a pretty good sign that you loved it somewhere.<\/p>\n

*A significant thing to note about our trip was that it was during Easter holiday. \u00a0We booked plane tickets last year without knowing that Easter in Denmark is observed for four days, so\u00a0most things other than tourist attractions and most restaurants are closed for those four days. \u00a0This was a bit heartbreaking\u00a0for me because one of the things\u00a0I had looked forward to most was visiting shops. \u00a0So out of the six days we were there, only two days were available for\u00a0going to certain places, which meant that we had to plan our trip by activity rather than how we normally do by location. \u00a0This presented challenges mostly with transportation and not being able to get through everything on our list, but it also opened us up to doing some fun things we wouldn’t have normally planned for. \u00a0Overall though, I wouldn’t recommend visiting during Easter, mainly to save yourself from the extra logistics of working your itinerary around the four days of holiday.<\/p>\n

Ok that’s enough! \u00a0Hopefully this guide helps you out if you’re planning on visiting, want to visit, or want to vicariously visit though this post. \u00a0Here’s everything we enjoyed, divided up into where to stay, what to do, what to eat, and where to shop.<\/p>\n

STAY<\/h1>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

We partnered with and stayed at Hotel D’Angletterre<\/strong><\/a> which was by far the best and most comfortable hotel experience of my life, as well as one of the most memorable parts of our trip. \u00a0We loved it for the friendly\u00a0staff, pretty views, and central location. \u00a0A lot of the things we wanted to see and do were around this area near Kongens Nytorv<\/strong>, making it very convenient to walk everywhere during the first few days.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

We stayed in one of the suites and it\u00a0made our arrival so much more relaxing. \u00a0We like to plan at least the first day of any trip for chilling and doing nothing, so we hung out in the room and visited the hotel spa which I like to think helped with my\u00a0jetlag (didn’t help O though, poor guy was wide awake at 3am).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

My favorite<\/em> part was the gorgeous balcony view. \u00a0I only wish it was warmer so that we could’ve had a meal out here. \u00a0I think we would’ve tried to spend as much time here as possible if it wasn’t so chilly, but we spent a good amount of time looking out and people watching everyone walking on the streets below.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

For the rest of the trip, we stayed in this Air Bnb studio apartment that we picked mainly for location. \u00a0Located in Vesterbro<\/strong>, which we found\u00a0commonly referred to as the “hipster” part of town, we got much more of a locals feel here. \u00a0We wanted to check out the meatpacking district\u00a0<\/strong>for the restaurants and nightlife but mistakingly chose to do this on Easter night, which the only places that were open were filled to capacity. \u00a0Looked like a fun\u00a0area to hang, though!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

A cool thing about where we stayed is that it was our first experience\u00a0living in a truly minimalist home. \u00a0I admired\u00a0how our host made the most of the small space, only having things that were necessary and functional. \u00a0I really liked her style.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

We watched a good amount of Netflix on that TV, I liked that too. \u00a0This is a good budget-conscious option and if, like for the last part of our trip where we were out and about everyday and all day long, you only really need a comfortable place to sleep.<\/p>\n

SEE<\/h1>\n
\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Nyhavn
\n<\/strong>The most iconic part of Copenhagen. \u00a0Nyhavn is a harbor lined mostly with restaurants\u00a0and filled with the cutest townhouses, where you’ll for sure\u00a0be able to get the ‘gram.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This was our first stop since it was a very short walk from our hotel. \u00a0We went on a boat tour<\/strong> and it was the perfect way to start the trip since it gave a quick overview of the city and some of the main attractions, from which we were able to decide which ones we weren’t going to go see (The Little Mermaid Statue was very underwhelming, pass).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Something to note: there are a bunch of locks along the rails that made me wish we had known to bring a lock, or that locks were being sold nearby (couldn’t find any- new Copenhagen business idea). \u00a0I’m totally into these cheesy kind of things and wanted so much to write our names on a lock and leave it behind. \u00a0Next time.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Rundetaarn (Round Tower)
\n<\/strong>About a $3 entry fee to walk up to the top of the tower and get a pretty sweet view of the city. \u00a0Very worth it, and not at all a bad walk up.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Fun fact, I’m deathly afraid of heights and cannot walk up near ledges or lean against rails or else I feel like I’m going to die. \u00a0I do love a great view, though!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Bispebjerg Kirkegard
\n<\/strong>A cemetery with beautiful scenery and gardens. \u00a0There’s a tunnel of\u00a0cherry blossom trees which I believe bloomed early April, so we missed the peak and the flowers were faded and falling, but it was still magical.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Grundtvigs Church
\n<\/strong>Right nearby the cemetery, this church’s architecture is mesmerizing. \u00a0We sat here for a bit just looking around and up and everywhere at the beautiful details. \u00a0I also wouldn’t mind getting married here.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Rosenborg Castle
\n<\/strong>I discovered that\u00a0castles are really, really COOL. \u00a0I had no idea. \u00a0We had so much fun perusing Rosenborg Castle and I was surprised by the king’s bathroom… not at all what I was expecting considering how ornate everything else was. \u00a0I found this way more funny than most people would. \u00a0Bonus: right nearby is the King’s Garden<\/strong>, which makes for a beautiful walk.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Christiansborg Palace
\n<\/strong>Home to the Danish parliament and some parts are\u00a0used by the Royal Family. \u00a0Really beautiful and interesting learning about the castle’s history. \u00a0We got the pass to visit all four areas that are open for tours and our favorite was the stables.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Horses! \u00a0One took a keen liking to O (her name was Semora) and put her head over the railing so that he could pet her. \u00a0That went on for a while and later we asked the security guard if it was ok to touch the horses and she said absolutely not. \u00a0Oops.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art<\/strong>
\nThough not in Copenhagen, it’s a short 25 minute train ride north to what is arguably referred to by many as the most beautiful museum in the world. \u00a0We spent the majority of Easter day here along with a million other people. \u00a0I couldn’t help but feel like we didn’t get the whole experience because one of the wings was closed due to maintenance, but what I most enjoyed was the outdoors and the sm\u00f8rrebr\u00f8d in the cafe (more on that topic soon).<\/p>\n

Place we wish we saw:
\n<\/strong>I know… we missed out on Tivoli<\/strong>, one of the oldest amusement parks still running. \u00a0We didn’t make enough time to squeeze it in properly, on top of being deterred by how rides were additional to the entry fee, but almost every source and person said that this is a must visit. \u00a0I wish we had gone! \u00a0Looks like it’s an especially beautiful night time visit.<\/p>\n

Transportation:
\n<\/strong>We were able to get around mostly by foot, and while the metro system here is really good\u00a0we only used it once to go to the Louisiana MoMA. \u00a0We used Uber often which unfortunately ended its services in Denmark the day before we left, after which we used taxis strategically for a day to get to the furthest places we wanted to go. \u00a0It was not cheap, but it saved us precious time. \u00a0Bikes are available all over for rental and it’s a very\u00a0bike friendly city, but\u00a0because of how cold it was we didn’t prefer this. \u00a0Biking seemed to be the solid option here, though.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

EAT<\/h1>\n
\n

We plan every trip by where we want to eat, and Copenhagen is a place to EAT. \u00a0Most hear about\u00a0Noma, which was ranked the best restaurant in the world\u00a0but is\u00a0no\u00a0longer in Copenhagen- missed it by a couple of months! \u00a0We noticed a lot of restaurants\u00a0being\u00a0run by an “ex-Noma” chef and ate much of what is categorized as new Nordic cuisine. \u00a0It was one of the more\u00a0exciting food adventures we’ve had and still we didn’t get to everywhere we wanted to go. \u00a0Will mention those places as well with much yearning.<\/p>\n

Tip: make reservations if possible. \u00a0Some places might require reservation further in advance so check ahead on availability. \u00a0Most places had an easy online reservation process on their website.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

108<\/strong>
\nThis was my favorite meal of the entire trip. \u00a0We didn’t originally have it in our itinerary and happened to walk past it on the first day while it was still closed. \u00a0I looked through the window from the outside and made reservations from my phone immediately. \u00a0It is SUCH a beautiful space (this photo isn’t cutting it) and the food was equally amazing.<\/p>\n

\"\"We got the oxtail hush puppies, mussels, celeriac, and short ribs (not photo’d), all bomb. \u00a0The thing I haven’t stopped thinking about is the mussels. \u00a0They’re one of my favorite things to eat\u00a0and I’ve never tasted them so clean like this. \u00a0It was simple but so unique\u00a0and one of the most memorable things I’ve ever eaten.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Amass
\n<\/strong>O’s favorite meal. \u00a0This was so good and much more of an experience than anywhere else. \u00a0It’s the kind\u00a0of place where when you come back from the bathroom they’ve refolded your napkin and are waiting at your chair to scoot you in as you sit. \u00a0Thank you, sir! \u00a0It was also the most expensive meal of our trip and worth it. \u00a0We did the lunch menu with wine pairings, which\u00a0was our first time trying orange wine and have since decided that we like orange wine.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Marchal
\n<\/strong>Located at Hotel D’Angletterre, we came here for the breakfast buffet and enjoyed it so much. \u00a0There are traditional American breakfast items along with options more traditional to a European breakfast.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Den Plettede Gris
\n<\/strong>A very adorable and tiny and good coffee shop. \u00a0We came across it on our walk to Amass and sat for a while.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Vakst
\n<\/strong>One of the Cofoco Restaurants,<\/strong> which was generally recommended by locals to go to any of them. \u00a0Vakst was good, but in comparison to everything else we ate it was less memorable, but still good. \u00a0It’s a gorgeous\u00a0spot located in Hotel SP34<\/strong>\u00a0which I was also interested in checking out. \u00a0 Other Cofoco Restaurants we wanted to try\u00a0were Host<\/strong> and Restaurant Cofoco.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Almanak<\/strong>
\nWe ate sm\u00f8rrebr\u00f8d more often than anything else in Copenhagen, and my favorite one was from here.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Sm\u00f8rrebr\u00f8d is an open faced sandwich usually served on buttered rye bread. \u00a0The two specials this day were crab and potato and I thought potato sounded so boring, but it blew me away. \u00a0Tasted too good to just be potato on rye bread. \u00a0I loved it so much.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u00d8l & Br\u00f8d
\n<\/strong>Meaning “beer and bread”, we came here in the morning expecting to be hungry and surprisingly we weren’t at all (common symptom of ours during food-scapade vacations), which was a shame because I heard the sm\u00f8rrebr\u00f8d here is one of the bests. \u00a0We talked to our very cool\u00a0waiter\u00a0and found out they make a lot of their own beers and schnapps here. \u00a0Went with schnapps and coffee which was a pretty good combo.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Granola
\n<\/strong>A breakfast spot, recommended by our Air BnB host. \u00a0Loved having a light breakfast with variety. \u00a0Located on a cute little street which looked like it had cute shops like Playtype,\u00a0<\/strong>which were all closed because we were there on Easter Monday, baaah.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Relae
\n<\/strong>Our last meal and great way to end our trip. \u00a0Highlights were the twice cooked potato that almost had the texture of pasta +\u00a0the best bread I’ve ever eaten in my life. \u00a0Located on Jaegersborggade<\/strong>, another cute street with cute shops.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Atelier September
\n<\/strong>A very cute cafe where I wanted to be adventurous\u00a0and not order the avocado toast but the waitress said it was the best thing they had so I got it.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Listen. \u00a0This was the best avocado toast ever, I’m sure of it. \u00a0The seasoning was perfect but the real magic was the soft and buttery rye bread. \u00a0All avocado toast should be served on this bread!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Bistro Royal<\/strong>
\nOne of the Madklubben<\/strong> restaurants, recommended to us as a more affordable option for a really great meal. \u00a0Steaks here were perfect and the rumors were true- it’s a good deal.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Geist
\n<\/strong>Had someone describe this place as hit or miss and that perfectly sums up our experience. \u00a0We really didn’t like 2 out of 6 small plates we ordered but we loved the other 4, the best being the spinach which I’d never order on my own but we took the waiter’s recommendation- works like a charm.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

We ran across multiple Lakagehuset<\/strong> locations and the pastries were good, but the favorite was Meyers Bageri<\/strong>. \u00a0I didn’t think I liked cinnamon rolls much until I tried this one. \u00a0Delicious and not too sweet, I wish we got more stuff!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Original Coffee<\/strong>
\nLocated at the top of Illum, this place was completely packed and there was only room to sit\u00a0here by the window. \u00a0Stopped for an espresso and found\u00a0out there’s a great view from the deck!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jagger
\n<\/strong>Went in on a whim while walking in Vesterbro and got their soft serve vanilla ice cream, which I’m going to remember forever. \u00a0I’ve never had soft serve so good. \u00a0It was thicker like a custard and had black specks of vanilla. \u00a0Going to go ahead and say it’s the best vanilla soft serve there is.<\/p>\n

Coffee Collective
\n<\/strong>Referred to as the best coffee in Copenhagen. \u00a0We were able to quickly drop in at the location on\u00a0 Jaegersborggade but if you’re looking for the really pretty location, that’s on Godthabsvej<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Steff’s Place
\n<\/strong>Actually, this was the last meal of our trip. \u00a0We heard we couldn’t leave without trying a Danish hotdog and I have to agree with that now. \u00a0Get it with all the toppings, it’s magic. \u00a0There’s one in the airport for your convenience.<\/p>\n

Places we wish we ate at:
\n<\/strong>Heard great things about Copenhagen Street Food<\/strong> and Torvehallerne<\/strong>, both food halls. \u00a0Between the two I’d go to Torvehallerne first for Hija de Sanchez<\/strong>, Grod<\/strong>, and\u00a0Hallernes Sm\u00f8rrebr\u00f8d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

SHOP<\/h1>\n
\n

Good thing to note is that most shops are generally open around\u00a010-5, some shorter or open only on certain days, so check before you go.<\/p>\n

Dansk
\n<\/strong>Home goods and accessories. \u00a0I think this was my favorite shop and it’s where I got that plant book I shared in the last monthly favorites post!<\/p>\n

Stilleben<\/strong>
\nCeramics, clothing, and accessories on the first floor and art prints on the second floor. \u00a0Everything was gorgeous.<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>A showroom of by Lassen home goods\u00a0that you can also shop. \u00a0I’m a big fan of this brand.<\/p>\n

Frama<\/strong>
\nApothecary, clothing, and home goods. \u00a0There are multiple rooms with different products set up in them and it was all so pretty. \u00a0Chatted with the friendly shopkeep who gave us an LA recommendation we hadn’t heard of, that was cool.<\/p>\n

HAY House<\/strong>
\nHome goods. \u00a0Changing my mind, this was my favorite shop. \u00a0Two floors completely\u00a0styled with HAY products. \u00a0Felt like I fan-girled hard and I could do an entire blog post on this place.<\/p>\n

Illum
\n<\/strong>Department store. \u00a0If there’s a one stop shop, this would be it. \u00a0You’ll find most of the major brands here which will save you trips from going to individual stores. \u00a0This is also where I found a Lyngby vase on sale, success! \u00a0We came here on a rainy day and it was the perfect activity.<\/p>\n

CasaShop<\/strong>
\nHome goods, furniture. \u00a0Most things here won’t fit in your luggage but it’s all very pretty to look at. \u00a0Eyeing that Cestita lamp.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Superlove
\n<\/strong>Clothing, accessories, home decor. \u00a0Shoutout to this place for being the only shop I saw open on Good Friday.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Kaktus<\/strong>
\nSucculents, art prints. \u00a0Can’t walk past this without stopping and going in. \u00a0This and the next two are all on Jaegersborggade.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Keramiker Inge Vincents
\n<\/strong>Ceramics. \u00a0Really unique style of porcelain ceramics that feels delicate and thin. \u00a0Vincents calls it “thinware”.<\/p>\n

Ladyfingers<\/strong>
\nJewelry. \u00a0 The shop is a collective of local jewelry makers. \u00a0I’m very into showing love to local makers and also have a fairly recent tradition of getting a ring from a new city I travel to as a souvenir, granted I find one I like. \u00a0I stole this tradition from a colleague\u00a0because I love the idea of wearing something everyday that reminds you of a favorite place. \u00a0Copenhagen is on my right index finger!<\/p>\n
